What we offered at DCCC?

1. Arts & Culture:

Chinese Arts and Culture go back many centuries. The history of the Chinese art is intriguing and has generated strong interests in both China and the West. The Center provides various activities and classes to explore Chinese Arts and Culture.

  • Performing Art Activities
    • Cantonese Opera Performance Concert: DCCC is working with Dallas Cantonese Opera Society on promoting Cantonese Opera. Cantonese opera has been popular in the southern China for many centuries. The traditional opera concerts integrate music, literature, face-painting and acrobatic skills. The singing is accompanied by traditional Chinese musical instruments. The costumes have colorful embroidery with ornate jewels and gorgeous headdresses. The face painting is one of the most fascinating arts in connection with this performing art, as each painted face has special meaning to the character.
    • Dance Classes: Yuan-Chi Dance (Chinese version of aerobic dancing, incorporating elements of Tai-Chi) and Chinese Folk Dance.
    • Chinese Singing Competition: This is a popular annual event in the community and attracts singers and audiences of all ages.
  • Cultural Celebration
    • Chinese New Year Festival: Every year hundreds of visitors including foster families with Chinese kids from surrounding cities come to Richardson Chinatown to participate in the festival. They enjoy delicious Chinese food, entertainment of dragon dance, martial arts, songs and dances, and gift of ‘red envelope’ for all children (a traditional Chinese token of good luck and prosperity).
    • Asian American Cultural Festival: We have over 40 booths from local vendors and organizations. Participants are welcome to eat authentic, delicious food and snacks, watch cultural performances, and enjoy cultural activities like paper-cutting and Chinese Yo-Yo. There is fun for all ages including a kid’s zone with games and pictures.

Signature Events
  • Visual Art Activities
    • Calligraphy and Painting Exhibitions: The exhibitions feature works by local artists of calligraphy and painting which are practiced by the Chinese scholars for over a thousand years. Each exhibition will last for two weeks and is open to the public.
    • Calligraphy and Painting Classes: DCCC offers several sessions of calligraphy and painting classes, taught by experienced art teachers year round. A simple definition of Chinese calligraphy may be to write Chinese characters using Chinese brush, ink, ink slab on a piece of Chinese rice paper. In China, calligraphy is considered the art of all arts, practiced by the well-learned scholars. It has more than three thousand years of history. The running style of Chinese calligraphy inspired Western artists such as Picasso to form the abstract paintings of the modern days. Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy. The important element of a good Chinese painting is the usage of the pen and ink. The lesson includes extensive coverage of the basic techniques as well as the more advance techniques. No previous art experience is required to join the lesson.
